SAIC Motor's self-operated fleet expands
On May 15, SAIC Motor's Anji Logistics christened the world's largest ro-ro ship, a 9,500-vehicle capacity ocean-going car carrier, as "Anji Ansheng". The vessel has since embarked on its inaugural journey to Europe.
With the introduction of this groundbreaking, highly capable, and energy-efficient low-carbon intelligent ultra-large car carrier, SAIC Anji Logistics' self-owned vehicle logistics fleet, which leads both in China and globally, has expanded to 35 vessels. The expanded fleet alleviates export shipping capacity constraints and further facilitates the swift expansion of Chinese independent brands into international markets.
SAIC Motor's significant advancements in overseas business serve as the primary driver behind its extensive "shipbuilding for overseas expansion" initiative.
The company's overseas expansion efforts began with passenger vehicle exports in 2001, which marked the start of its "strategy 1.0 — product exports". The establishment of a plant in Thailand in 2013 signaled the commencement of "strategy 2.0 — localized operations".
By the conclusion of 2024, SAIC Motor had successfully delivered over 5.5 million vehicles in overseas markets, solidifying its position as the leading Chinese automaker in terms of highest export volume. The company has maintained its top position in vehicle exports for eight consecutive years and achieved annual overseas sales exceeding 1 million vehicles for three consecutive years, with sales in developed European countries accounting for 25 percent of the total.
SAIC Motor's global automotive brand, MG, which transitioned to an independent entity in 2007, has surpassed 5 million vehicles in cumulative global sales and secured a position among the top 10 best-selling brands in over 20 countries worldwide.
The comprehensive globalization of the entire industrial chain has laid a robust foundation for the dynamic growth of SAIC Motor's overseas operations.
As the first Chinese automotive enterprise to adopt a systematic, planned, and institutionalized approach to international expansion, SAIC Motor has established a global automotive industry chain encompassing R&D, marketing, logistics, parts, manufacturing, finance, and used cars. Its products and services are now available in more than 100 countries and regions worldwide.
SAIC Motor's Angji Logistics, the world's largest automotive logistics company, has developed China's foremost self-owned vehicle logistics transportation fleet, comprising 35 diverse car carriers, including river vessels, domestic sea vessels, and foreign trade sea vessels.
By 2026, the foreign trade ocean-going fleet of SAIC Angji Logistics is projected to expand to 22 vessels, with route resources covering major export destinations for Chinese automakers such as Western Europe, the Mediterranean region, Mexico, Western South America, Southeast Asia, Australia-New Zealand, and the Middle East.
During the recently concluded 2025 Shanghai International Auto Show, SAIC Motor officially unveiled its "strategy 3.0 — the Global Strategy," which emphasizes a combined "Global + Local" approach.
Over the next three years, leveraging its extensive expertise in electric, intelligent, and connected technologies, SAIC Motor plans to introduce 17 new overseas models, including SUVs, sedans, MPVs, and pickups.
These models, equipped with a new HEV hybrid system, will cater to various global market segments, while cutting-edge technologies like solid-state batteries will be integrated to further enhance global automotive brands and localized system ecosystems.
